The arrival of School of Rock in Bend came with a lot of intention. The goal was to strike a balance between designing a tantalizing, memorable space and adhering to the required brand standards. We incorporated a mix of dynamic elements to create an environment that is vibrant, engaging, and inspiring, while reflecting the brand and ownership’s energy and purpose.
We took inspiration from well-known artists, cultural moments, and songs to design a space full of color. A great example of this is the commissioned mural in the primary rehearsal room, which welcomes Chopin, Jimi Hendrix, and Nina Simone to the jungle.
It was important that the design did not take itself too seriously. We wanted it to feel like a place where students would immediately feel at home and, over time, make it their own.

By approaching the brand standards with a playful eye, we were able to design a space that feels relevant and approachable to the local community and its core audience, while still feeling distinctly on brand. The use of throwback elements, such as the cassette tile in the bathrooms paired with "graffiti" walls, creates an experience that is both nostalgic and unexpectedly educational.
Leaving some walls intentionally blank means that, as the school establishes itself, students and teachers can bring in their concert posters and hang them in the hallways, allowing the space to truly come alive and create a sense of community in a beloved space.
